The Good Practice Exchange Case Studies Library will become the 'home' for all the case studies that are routinely identified as part of Wales Audit Office work. This includes case studies from our national reports for example Improving Access to the Countryside or Delayed Transfers of Care and more local reports such as our Housing Association Inspection Reports.
To engage with children and young people, Caerphilly has established a Junior Forum (ages 7 to 11) and a Youth Forum (ages 11 to 25). Though not entirely a new concept, there are few examples of such forums in Wales. They provide an opportunity for children and young people to engage with and directly influence the Council's governance, planning and decision-making process. This engagement also means that children and young people's needs can be reflected in service delivery. It is also a way of contributing to the active citizenship of children and young people.
Denbighshire County Council has established Member Area Groups (MAGs) which provide on-going engagement and dialogue with communities at grass roots level. Although still in their infancy, MAGS offer the only opportunity for Elected Members to collectively discuss issues on a geographic basis. This consultation means that community feedback could directly influence the scrutiny arrangements of the Authority and partnerships.
Denbighshire County Council ran a successful participatory budgeting project relating to a public park in Ruthin. Its aim was to engage and consult with residents after significant protest following the demolition of the park's paddling pool. The Council decided to engage with residents and offer them £25,000 funding. They could then decide how to spend this money in the park.
Consultation centred on the current experiences of children, young people and families who require intensive support, identifying key areas of concern, leading to informed recommendations for improvement.
The Council is seeking to reduce its own carbon footprint, and is also encouraging residents to do the same through engaging with communities to support local carbon reduction projects and initiatives.
Engagement and Participation - Tenant and Leaseholder Participation Strategy - Wrexham County Borough Council
Since 2004 a comprehensive long term strategy has been developed by the Council for tenant and leaseholder engagement and participation which has resulted in residents working with elected members through the Wrexham Tenant and Member Partnership to improve service delivery.
The Council's Energy team has introduced a number of energy-saving initiatives within Newport's International Sports Village. The latter is made up of two buildings - one is comprised ofa swimming pool complex, fitness facilities and an indoor tennis centre; whereas and the second building is a Velodrome. These facilities inherently consume large amounts of electricity on air handling, low pressure hot water pumping and lighting loads.
The Council identified that Plascrug Primary School was being heated by various forms of electrical systems, which resulted in the original school campus having a Display Energy Certificate (DEC) rating of 'E'.
The County Council built an energy efficiency edifice of 1,032m to replace an old nursery unit. It now serves as a nursery, a creche, as well as a meeting room complex. The local residents and prospective end users were requested to provide their input on the project before its initiation. This was in regard to use of the building, colour schemes and the needs of the local residents.
The ‘Zero Carbon Communities’ project was launched by Carmarthenshire County Council and Menter Cwm Gwendraeth, and delivered clean energy and sustainability benefits for communities across Carmarthenshire.
